I work with a bank that only installs Dell PC's and laptops. Trust me, I repair an average of 3 laptops a day! All dells. Dell is cheap for a reason. And it is not economies of scale. If sony can't match Dell's price, and the Japanese are known for effeciency and price leadership, them something is not right with Dell's products.
I would go with Fujitsu, Sony, Hp or Toshiba. These things last a lifetime. And HP bought Compaq, not Dell buying compaq as someone earlier said.

I think Dell is better then Acer. Your budget can get you a Dell high performance notebook. They provide universal warranty, so you don't worry about service anywhere in the world. The Dell XPS series gets a high recommendation from PC Magazine :)

I have a Dell and a Gateway laptop and I like them both. Personally I love my Gateway but have had very little problems with my Dell. With 1.5K you should be able to get a pretty decent computer no matter what you want it to do. both of their customer service are helpful.

I have had nothing but good luck with Dell. Their prices have gotten a lot more resonable recently. And they will frequently have specials that will make them even better. Their service is excellent. Their systems use quality hardware. They don't load a lot of junk software on their systems.
I used to work on Acers a lot a few years ago. I never had a very good experience with them. However, recently they have been getting a much better reputation. I still can't say anything good about their service. But their product is getting a lot better.

I have personally purchased around 50 laptops for personal use and friends and I have to honestly say I have tried them all. However, I gotta say that now, I am HIGHLY in love with the new Mac Book Pro. You can run both Windows and Mac OS with the new Boot Camp software that is free from Apple and get the best of both worlds. If you are using the laptop for work, it will run Office and everything else you need. And, if for home, and you do video editing, picture editing, etc, you cannot beat Apple for the included suite of applications. I have HATED Apple my entire life, but now I am in love. I am a convert. The new Intel Pro processors did it for me. For your budget, you should be able to get a nice laptop from Apple.

I am a computer technician and yes dell is a good laptop to invest in. I haven't seen to many problems with their computers.
When you order one they should ask you what you intend to do with it (like play games and what not) and will help you get the best hardware for what you want to do.
