There is a paint tool called an edger that is made for that. It is like a nappy piece of carpet in a metal holder with a handle. It has two offset nylon wheels on one edge.
The trick is that you pour some paint into a roller pan. Then you take the edger and dip the nappy surface into the paint (not too much). Then you hold the edger with the rollers up at the ceiling near the top edge. Move the edger along with its nylon wheels rolling along the ceiling. It will keep the brushing surface away from the ceiling so that no paint gets on there. After you get the part near the ceiling done use a regular roller for the rest of the wall.
It is fast (but don't go so fast that paint splatters). Wipe off the wheels if they get any paint on themselves.
I practiced before going near the ceiling by doing a vertical corner between two walls. That way if there was a trick I was just getting paint onto another surface that was going to be the same color when I was done.

My wife and I painted our whole house, 3200 sq ft, in about 1 week. If you want a straight line, sure you can get this tool and that tool, or tape or whatever..... In the end, you get a better finish if you go and get a stool, (I hope you dont have vaulted ceilings) and a 2 1/2" chisel/slanted type of nylon brush. If you are only doing 1 room, you'll only need 1 brush. You'll also wanna get a cheap plastic cup, and probably some latex gloves.
Anyways... all you do is get enough paint on the tip of the brush and you run the edge of the brush along the edge of the wall. Just be careful and very conscious of what you are doing. Doing it this way, it takes about an hour to do a 15 x 15 room, maybe longer since its your first time. But you'll get it down REALLY fast... Trust me....

Just use the 1 1/2 in. masking tape and tape off the ceiling. They do make many types of what is called trim brushes but without experience, you really need to use it with the tape...but definitely get a trim brush...just roll the paint up the wall and stop about 2 inches short of the ceiling...(just to be safe. usually you would stop about 1 in. short.) then go back with a trim brush and paint all the way to the tape.even on it a little to be sure there is no spaces on the wall. The paint must stop right exactly where the ceiling starts. don't worry about it seeping under the tape as long as you stuck it good. Now , and this is very Important, as soon as you get done or if you decide to take a break longer than 30 min. REMOVE THE TAPE!!! It will be extremely difficult to remove if you don't...and you will have to worry about the paint seeping under the tape.

Use a angle cut trim brush, always buy a good trim brush, put the paint with the brush at a slight angle, keep a wet rag on the ladder and you can wipe off any that you get on the ceiling. Use nice smooth even strokes with the brush..

The best way to do this would be to use the tape that is made especially for painting. Hopefully you don't have the dreaded popcorn finish on your ceiling. Another way that makes it much easier is to get one of the brushes where the tip is angled in about a 2-3" brush. Makes alot of painting jobs easy.

They have this brush that has edging on it. You can only put paint in the middle so that you can edge along good. I cant exactly think of what it is called. We had to paint the woodwork, and I used that brush and it worked perfectly. I had no paint on the wood work and all of it was where I wanted. You can get it at wal-mart in the painting section. I believe it was blue. Also you can use masking tape, that will block getting paint on your ceiling. Just put enough on there just to make sure.
