that there are heaps of teachers unable to get jobs, and yet the government are still paying people to train as well as paying to advertise.

Where do you live kajunprincezz.
Sadly I cannot move as my OH the main wage earner has a good job and we need his money.
There are a great deal of unemployed teachers, many people from my course ( apparently the best in the UK ) among them. They have cut places and, I think, the amount of money they are giving out, but it's not enough to find us all jobs.

There is no time limit between qualifying as a teacher and doing your induction year in England - and never has been.

I don't know where you're looking for jobs but many primary people are finding it hard to get jobs so you'll need to write a very strong application.

The problem is in primary, not secondary (we are still short).

Unfortunately (and this is going to sound mean) the money has made some immature 21 year olds go into teaching without thinking whether they can cut it. They then fail to get jobs (because this is one area you DON'T want a poor employee) and blame the system. Unfortunately any incentive scheme is going to have an element of that in it.

I have to say though, as an existing teacher it is nice to be able to interview a range of people for a job and pick the best, rather than scrambling round for anyone. In any other industry, this would be the 'norm'; most graduate jobs are competative, not 'get a job free here if you want an extra year at uni'. In this life, you are owed nothing. What I have been waiting for for a long time is a little respect for my profession, and being able to work with better, in-it-for-life colleagues and do a better job, rather than settle for people in it for a year or two (or funding a trip from Oz) is actually rather refreshing.

Should it be a good thing that anyone who applies for a job educating kids is given it? It doesn't happen in law, banking, medicine or administration- why is it seen as 'right' with teaching?

I do agree they should stop pushing for primary PGCEs now, and for some subjects at secondary. For core and shortage subjects, though, we still need people. Perhaps it could be means-tested or done like a scholarship, based on aptitude and prior experience?

Teaching is a noble profession. If the Govt cannot give employment presently it is due to lack of planning. A teacher can start a tutorial and earn. Teachers are the people who help make good citizens, the govt cannot ignore them for long.

They are paying $50,000 a year for teachers here and cannot find enough of them. The jobs are out there, you just have to look. And if you're not ready or able to move, then you can't really complain. When you're up to your neck in water, you need to either sink or swim. Complaining about it just means you get water in your mouth.

I don't think you are talking from facts because I think teachers are in short supply as evidenced by the number of supply teachers found in secondary education.
