What does it take to become an elementary teacher? Is the career worth all of the effort put into becoming one? How will I know if it is right for me? I want to become a photographer, but that isn't exactly guaranteed to pay the bills. I'm currently enrolled in program at the Art Institute Online for a Bachelor's in Advertising, but it is really really expensive, and I don't want my new husband and I to go into debt so early or have to worry about money. And teaching kids is one of the only things that really sparks any interest that is available at a community college. Help me please. lol.

Do you love children? Do you like to teach and explain? Are you patient enough? Do you see yourself as a teacher? Are you ready to work hard and sometimes to sacrifice your free time? Money is the last thing you should need here. It's a hard job, but it pays off greatly if you give your soul away. I'm a teacher myself and I know. So it's for you to decide whether you want it or no, you know yourself better.

Reading your question reveals that you have many things going through your head. Whether you become a teacher or not is somethng only you can answer -- but there are some things for you to consider.

(1) A teacher is a great job -- my mother was a teacher for 43 years. But it doesn't exactly pay that well and society does not give you back the recognition in almost any way that is even remotely commensurate with the effort you put forth.

(2) You should do what you enjoy. If that is teaching, you should teach. If it is photography -- you should do that. My point is that you should pursue your passion. Money follows passion in life.

There is a company that will help you discover your passion. It is called te Kolbe Corporation. They are located in Phoenix. Their website is www.kolbe.com.

You can take their assessment online to discover the unique ability that God has given you. I have done this and own my own business and have all my employees do this as well.

Do what you love and it won't seem like work -- and believe me -- money will follow.

You just have to trust your instincts.

Good question.

Good luck.

Do what you think you will love. I teach and I completely enjoy it. You'll need a bachelor's degree with a minor in elementary education to become a teacher. Maybe you should try to volunteer in an elementary school at least one day a week for a while to see if it's something you're truly interested in. If you have the time in your schedule, you can even sign up to be a sub in your county/city. Teaching is a lot of work and even more homework, but if you enjoy it then it's definitely worth doing.

Talk to a career counselor and he/she would point you in the right direction.

The effort is worth it ONLY if being a teacher is something you truly desire. Teachers are not in it for the money, they're in it to educate and shape the future of America.
