Are you an American and have you seen The Daily Show? What do you think of it?

From The Times [Comment] Tuesday, 17th October 2006

American mainstream [news] is changing, and the pundits are blaiming one man: Jon Stewart, 43 year old comedian from New Jersey, who hosts The Daily Show, a nightly broadcast on the Comedy Central cable TV channel and seen in UK on More4 [Freeview]. Your comments please. Is this how you get your news? Are the Americans being turned into a nation as sardonic as the British? They used to say that we Brits were a nationa of sceptics, but we're evolving into something approaching a nation of synics.

Note: The Daily Show gets an audience of about 1.5 million which is extraordinary for a cable channel...don't you think?

When I lived in the U.S., Jon Stewart was the only news (on standard cable at least) that was worth watching. He got more truth in there than the propaganda machines with their biased prefab 'reporting.'

I moved to the UK during the build-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq and quickly became an absolute news junkie -- I was astounded by how much better it was than the U.S. (omitting iTV of course). I've been here long enough that I've calmed down a bit, Well, it depends on what's going on in the world. Or the fuzzy-wuzzy reinvention of the Tory party persona -- that's really scarier than N. Korea with a nuke, considering what they'll do if they win.

Do you ever watch Bremner, Bird and Fortune? There are usually bits in the middle, either Bremner alone or all three, that are loaded with facts, things that we don't hear much of elsewhere but are crucial to really understanding a situation. Jon Stewart is like that, making some connections and delivering it in a way that gets through both the cynicism and the skepticism. Comedy is a powerful force. When it's used well.

I've NEVER considered getting Sky here. Until More4 advertised the Daily Show. I'm still holding out, but it is tempting.

It's a comedy show, first and foremost. Comedy in the form of a fake newscast is nothing new. NBC's Saturday Night Live has been doing it for over 30 years. The Daily Show is indeed humorous and I try to catch the 8:00 reruns whenever I can (I'm usually asleep by 11:00).

Much of Jon Stewart's comedy takes the form of selectively chosen soundbites that reinforce commonly held stereotypes about public figures, particularly those in the current presidential administration. Examples of such stereotypes include "Bush is dumb," "Cheney is evil," and "Rumsfeld is deceitful."

Those who already hold these opinions point to the soundbites and say "See? I'm right". Those who do not accuse the show of liberal bias or even "America-hating." Finally, those who recognize the show for what it is (a comedy show), laugh at Jon's funny faces and hopefully seek out actual news sources to gather their information and make decisions as to how and by whom they wish to be governed.

The Daily Show isn't turning Americans into cynics. The unrivaled hypocrisy and political pandering of our elected officials from both parties are doing that on their own.

Yes. I am an American, and I live in America, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

It is so nice to be able to sit down and watch an entertaining and humorous program that puts all that is going on in the world of politics into perspective. I'm also a huge fans of The Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert (proud members of the Colbert Nation).

I Love the Daily Show-Jon Stewart show. It doesn't have all the excess baggage of the regular news. It comical and you get a sense of what's going on in the news All other news have have over-analyzing analyst, doctors, commentators, etc. blowing a lot of hot air. Just tell me what happened. I rather watch his show than Fox New, CNN or any local stuff. I hope the show remains the same and he doesn't get pressured into changing his show format. Kudos to Jon!!!

I love the daily show. I watch it every night during the regular late evening news. I love Jon Stewart. He is the most funniest man ever. I crack up when check in with Stephen Colbert and Stephen is watching Oprah or something and he doesn't answer Jon's question.

i watched it last night and laughed my a-- off...jon takes skewering both parties to a higher level--and he is usually dead on. And he isn't afraid to expose the hypocrisy of the right a la karl rove and billo. And hannity. and dick(head) morris. Colbert is great, too. On a scale of 1 to 10, i give stewart a 12.

I'm an American living in Glasgow, and from the stuff I've seen on YouTube, I think the guy's pretty good. He's got a lot of valid points, but I feel sometimes that he could go further with those points, but doesn't or can't.
