It's a natural phenomenon, we humans just noticed it and gave it names. "Four" seasons is somewhat arbitrary, in reality the weather and temperature are changing daily.
The axis around which our earth spins is tilted 23 degrees from the plane of our orbit around the sun. That means that for roughly half of our trip around the sun, the northern hemisphere is pointing towards the sun, and the southern hemisphere points away from the sun. For the other half of the orbit, it's reversed. The change in the angle that sunlight hits us varies the temperature dramatically -- when the north is pointing towards the sun, it's summer in the north and winter in the south. When the south is pointing towards the sun, it's summer in the south and winter in the north. At two points in our orbit, neither side points towards the sun, and sunlight is equal on both hemispheres -- these are the equinoxes, one on Sept. 21 (roughly) and one on March 21 (roughly). Halfway between each equinox, one hemisphere is pointing as far as it can towards the sun, the other as far as it can away -- these are the solstices, one in June and one in December. We use the solstices and equinoxes as "marking points" to set the beginnings and endings of seasons, but they just correlate to our physical orbit around the sun.

I wasn't around when the phrase was first coined, so I can't tell you who did it. It is referred to in the Bible, so it has been around for a long time. As to why winter is cold, the earth is CLOSER to the sun, therefore, less land mass is heated and the days are shorter. Which part of the earth that is tilted toward the sun determines which part is experiencing winter, and which summer. Simple meteorology. Learned it in 2nd grade.

the seasons come from the earth's position around the sun. if you want a warm winter, move to the southern hemisphere. they are in their "summer" right now. if you live near the equator, it will be warm year round. winter is cold for you because of your latitude. take an earth science class and you will learn the whole thing, but those are the basics.

Well the earth tilt and sun thing, but each season has things that grow, and the coldness puts most plants into hibernation so they can be beautiful in the spring time. Winter kinda acts like a purification for the earth.

Depends on where you are located. Winter is cold. Summer is hot. Winter can be hot but then it is more like summer. Summer in Greenland is cold but then it is more like winter. Johathan Winters is warm but Nuclear Winter is cold. Go figure.

The axsis of the earth changes where the northern hemisphere is farther away. We are also further from the sun in the earth's orbit.
