I've got some huge curtains - my ceilings are 14ft high and they're in a cream cotton and lined. I can't afford to dry clean them as I think they'll be really expensive but they are very dusty - is there anyway I could dryclean them myself? They are definitely dryclean only and can't be washed or they will shrink.

I vacuum mine thoroughly to get rid of the dust then use a steam cleaner with a brush attachment. This freshens them and I haven't had any trouble with shrinkage! I use my steam cleaner on furniture as well without problems. The only time I use a dry cleaning agent is on stubborn stains as you cant buy it in large quantities anyway and it cant be used in a domestic washing machine! If you dont like the idea of using steam then spray with a fabric freshener after you vacuum.
Hope this helps - Good Luck!

Have you tried vacuuming them? I use the hose on my vacuum with the upholstery nozzle, and it works well for getting rid of surface dust and dirt. Because of their light color, I would do the following,,and I know this sounds like a bit of work.
Spred a clean sheet on the floor, lay the curtain on top of it, then, holding the hose a foot or so away from the curtain, start to vacuum. If you need to get closer to the curtain to clean it do so, but, use caution that you do not mark the curtain with the vacuum hose.
Good Luck.

Leave them hanging on the windows and use your vacuum attachments and vaccum them off, if dust is the only problem. If they still need to be cleaned after this, you can buy Dryel, it's a product, actually a whole kit to dry clean your own fabrics at home. Depending on how many sets of drapes you have, it might take more than one kit. You can buy Dryel at Walmart. Its with laundry detergent and startches and things of that nature.

buy that drycleaning kit they sell in the stores and put them in the dryer but follow the directions because you will either have to put it on low heat or air dry. your mainly getting the dust out of the curtains.

You can try steam cleaning them, you can rent steam cleaners at almost any grocery store, or you can try the Bissel Little Green Steam Cleaner, it comes with attachments, but I don't know if they will reach 14ft, you might have to stand on a step stool.

Use the nozzle on the hoover with spot cleaner for any stains. You could also use Fabreeze to freshen up any nasty odours.

No. But you can hang them over a clothes line and beat them like a rug.

wash them in the tub by hand and then hang them up to dry..save from them getting wrinkled and shrinking in the dryer
