Cancun was developed as a resort for North Americans. Just about everyone is required to speak English. Food and water are safe to consume in all the hotels. There are a few tours that are interesting. Tulum and Chicinitza are old Inca sights. Cinottis can be seen by tour. These are spring fed lakes, no swimming. These used to be human sacrificial sites. There are ample night clubs for all genres. Good fresh seafood. Isla Muheres is close, by boat, with wonderful restaurants. Not much else there. Lobster is a must.

Merida, the capitol is about 4-5 hour drive. I would not recommend renting a car. Roads are narrow and Mexican drivers are like bull fighters. Taxi rental is available by the day if you like.

Cozumel is a small island. I had been there before it developed. There were only two hotels. It's a bustling resort now. The beaches are like powdered sugar. Scuba diving and snorkling are their biggest attraction.
Guides for scuba are available. Wonderful coral and beautiful clear water. Good deep sea fishing. Tropical fish are beautiful to observe.

Of course swimming is year round at both.

The bad, and this is all rumour, don't rent a car. Bandits may be out looking for rental cars. The bus will cost you about $1 to go anywhere on hotel row and they run all night long.......very safe! Never went to Cozumel, went to Isla Mujeres and had a great time snorkeling and seeing the small island. Beach there is beautiful and water is calm and clear. No known advisories for Cancun, usually they are for Mexico City, the capital which is far enough away for all of us. Go and enjoy! We go 1-2 times per year and stay in our timeshares.

You couldn't pay me to go to Mexico

Dominic Ianiero, 59, and his wife Nancy, 55, of Woodbridge, Ont., near Toronto, were found in their room a five-star resort near Playa del Carmen on Feb. 20, 2006, with their throats slashed. The couple and more than a dozen other family members were in Mexico for their daughter's wedding.

Mexican authorities have been criticized for their handling of the case and for the bizarre twists in their statements to the media.
