It stalls as I approach stop lights. Its a 1991 Lincoln Towncar. Thanks.

Sometimes when you use the heat option with defrosters on the older cars, the A/C clutch turns on. This will put a load on the engine and when you slow down the idle may be too low to keep the engine running. On those engines with carbs, there should be an idle solenoid swith that kicks on and picks up the idle. Check the wire going to it and make sure that it hasnt been removed. If it is on, then you may just need an idle adjustment , check the timing at the same time plus the condition of the tune up.

Lincoln uses a vaccuum process to change modes (floor, panel, defrost etc) you may have a vaccuum leak. If the fan is off, and you change from floor to panel etc and it stalls, it is a vaccuum leak. If it stalls when you turn on the fan, your alternator is not charging well enough to support the load. Check your battery cable connections for tightness and corrosion as well.

If neither of those, it could be a grounding issue. There may be a bad ground that shorts when the system is turned on.

Speed governor is crap.
Your heater is a load if you start the heater the engine speed will drop and an electronic system need to increase the fuel injection to maintain the same engine speed
If unfortunately you speed drop too much you engine stalls.

I assume you may not have nay electronic injection on this car and tuning may have be done without the heater.

it may possible to fix the problem in increasing for instance the idle speed but you will consume more fuel afterward.

i own a repair shop,and it sounds like it might have a short in it, or the air conditioner clutch is locking up on it ,it does cycle its self when you turn the heater on,and it may be trying to lock the compressor up on it,i have a t-bird in the shop that would do this,it would run fine,and if you turned the heater on it would die out ,not all the time but most of the time it would, id have it checked out it may cause more severe problems on it if you don't have it repaired,good luck i hope this help,s

Two possibilities.1 the heater coil is plugged. 2 the heater switch is bad and causing a short in your electrical system.
