You could be magnesium deficient. Calcium and magnesium work hand in hand. Calcium (Ca) gives muscles strength and Magnesium (Mg) relaxes muscles. Too much Ca or too little Mg and you end up w/muscle spasms and tightness (plus possibly other symptoms such as insomnia, headaches or constipation.)
Good luck. I've had back spasms and they are no fun. Omega 3's have also helped me a great deal. They deal specifically with inflammation.

I have a bad back so I take Pain Relief Complex and for the muscle tightness or muscle cramping I take Cal Mag as soon as I feel it coming on. I usually take Cal Mag just before bed.

I have similar problems and the best thing I did was do some stretching. I know it might hurt but keep doing it and the pain should melt away. I have shoulder pain and have done physical therapy, which helped tremendously and the best part was the stretching on the BowFlex machine. Ice packs also helped but I really liked the stretch part. I don't think the pain relievers will help as a cure but you might inquire about physical therapy.
Good luck to you.
