Totalitarian governments want complete control over their citizen's lives including what they think, do, and say in their personal lives. The best fictional example of this is George Orwell's 1984. People were watched to make sure that they did exactly what the government (Big Brother) wanted. We have no examples of pure Totalitarianism on earth but our technology level is quickly approaching a point where it would be possible to even monitor people's thoughts. The Soviets and Red Chinese probably have come the closest. What you mostly see in dictatorships is Authoritarian government where they merely want people to conform in public and say the right things outwardly but aren't as concerned with the citizens believing the propaganda.

A totalitarian government is a government similar to what you see in the movie 1984. Totalitarianism thrives off of controlling the people by fear.
Basically, the government controls everything - and I mean everything - including your emotional behavior. I think it's even more severe than a Communist government.
To sum it up in one succinct phrase - if it doesn't benefit the progress and advancement of the state - it is wrong.

A Totalitarian government is a form of government where the population generally has no say in how its governed. Its a one-party system where there is no choice of leadership. Its sort of an umbrella term used to describe several forms of government, but its basically talking about a dictatorship or tyranny.
