No. People im my profession actually hand out information to our parents that explains why they are not good. They can actually delay children in their gross motor skills because the way a child sits ina walker is not good for their spine. It does not help children learn to walk, because they use different muscles when "walking" in a walker. They are okay for 10 minutes at a time if you need to use the bathroom, do dishes, etc... But past 10 minutes can actually do some harm to your baby.

My baby is 5 months old now and we just got her a walker the other day, she loves it! Just try out the walkers on display in the shops with your baby.. if he/she can touch the floor with their feet in the walker and can hold their heads up just fine then they can use it no worries at all:) As for possible "accidents" with walkers that is only if parents are not responsible. Never let your baby out of sight if they are in a walker and never have a walker in a room where there is access to stairs, make sure stairs are blocked off with baby gates or something to that effect or choose another room. [Addition] Baby Walkers Googled! Should you buy a baby walker? Sara writes: "I thought walkers weren't safe. If that's the case, why are they still on the market?" It's true that walkers are a major safety hazard--or were until 1997 when walker safety standards were improved to protect against stairway falls (a leading cause of walker-related injuries). According to this standard, walkers must either have a bottom friction strip to stop the walker if its wheels drop over the edge of a step, or be too wide to fit through a 36-inch-wide doorway. Walker-related incidents have declined since the 1997 standard was introduced. In 2003 (the latest available government data), the number of injuries from walkers to children younger than 15 months was 3,200, an 88 percent reduction since 1992. Some of this reduction may be the result of stationary activity centers supplanting wheeled walkers as the product of choice. Still, even with friction strips, we think 3,200 injuries are too many, and don't consider conventional walkers to be 100 percent safe. Canada has banned the sale of walkers completely. My take on this is if you are responsible with your baby in a walker you will not have injuries especially the stairs injuries! You must be responsible with a baby in a walker but that doesnt mean you shouldn't get one.

Walkers can be good for a baby in that they sit up and gives them an opportunity to have their feet under them. The problem with walkers is the tip factor. Walkers, and the little ones in them can fall down stairs and other unhappy events. So if you plan on using a walker, the child should be well monitored. Your child will learn to walk without using one, so the choice is yours and yours alone if you want to use one.

Walkers are great! However you have to be able to watch your child the whole time he's in one! I wish I could find one for my son... Exersausers are okay but they just don't do the job quite as well. You need to find a walker that also has stoppers for the wheels so that it can also be a stationary play area.

I bought a baby walker and my daughter loved it because she could move around the house. You have to watch them every minute because they can reach stuff they normally wouldn't be able to.
The walker ate up my toes when she would run into me.
Other than that, I enjoyed giving her the freedom to explore. It helped her feel more independent and in control, which made her happy.

Our pediatrician recommended against them because the baby can run into walls and tables and knock things down on top of them. We used something called a Hop and Pop. It's the same shape as a walker but is stationary. It has some bounce (hence the hop), and if they hop big enough it will make a toy on the tray pop some balls (the pop part of the name). It had other toys and lights and sounds attached to the tray. She loved it.

As long as you buy a new one and check the safety standards. The old ones, and the ones you find at garage sales or given by friends may not have the standards. My doctor actually recommended one because we only bought the excersaucer and our daughter got so bored she screamed and wouldn't go in it and she would only crawl no matter how hard we tried with her to get her to walk. The walker was her saftey net and she spent about 2 months in it and was walking perfectly. Make sure all stairs have mounted gates (meaning attached to the wall, not just the pressure secure ones).

My son was in physical therapy do to a genetic disablility from the time he was 8 months old and then my daughter had it from birth. All of our therapists were very against walkers. They said they developed all the wrong types of muscles and can delay walking because the baby is trying to figure out how to walk in a sitting position for a while. They also recommended the exersaucer.
