In Brazil there is a large dispute over who is the inventor of the airplane. Most people there deny the official answer (the Wright Brothers) and say it was actually a (surprise, surprise) Brazilian - Santos Dumont. Where do the British stand?

Having lived 20+ years in NZ I am aware of their claim to having the first air-plane to fly, a little searching found me an appropriate site to verify it. Quote and link below.

"Popular history has it that the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk [in the United States] were the first to fly [a heavier-than-air craft], but this is not true! The first flight was by a twenty-five year old New Zealander, Richard Pearse on March 31, 1902. Pearse, (1877 - 1953), is not generally known for this wonderful feat as [until recently?] there has been very little publicity about it. In fact the first formal mention of his achievement was some seven years later in the newspapers of 1909."

A)The brazilians lie
B)The wright brothers rule
C) the wright brothers invented the airplane
The british don't really play a big part in the invention of hthe airplane, but they primarily used it in WWI with the rest of the nations. The Wright Brothers, used ideas of many different people and became the first people to actually cultivate an entire made airplane. So, in answer to your question, the wright brothers did not exactly invent the airplane, but they were the first ones to make it.

Santos-Dumont created from 1898 airships. With one he surrounded the Eiffel tower in 1901.
His first airplane, a doubledecker, flew 100 years ago, in 1906.
This means, that he was slightly after Orville and Wilbur Wright.
His "Demoiselle" of 1909, however, is considered as the worlds first sport-airplane. All these were built not in Brazil, but in Europe, generally in France.

Well in England it is spelt aeroplane, in the US by act of Congress they say airplane. No pilot would say 'plane. As to who invented it Leonardo Da Vinci made drawings and some say that he actually made an air craft. The Wright brothers got off the ground early in the 20thc, but there are several others including an Engishman that are reputed to have flown earlier.

Leonardo Da Vinchi. But it had no motor. So you can consider it a hang glider. Wright Brothers actually made the first airplane that only lasted a couple of seconds.

EDIT: Wait a minute. They have what they call air gliders. They are planes that strictly just soar through the air using Da Vinchi's concept. It glides like how eagles do. So the answer is Leonardo Da Vinchi.
