It depends, If you’re playing against weak (fish) players you should ultra solidly (throwing most of your hands before the flop). The idea is to just play the odds and win in the long run. However, strong players will notice what you’re doing and won’t let you get away with it. You’re going to need to mix it and make some brave moves if you’re going to take any money of them.

Professional card players have to have something to work off of. It depends on how much money your cousin has. These people that play poker for a living didn't just get lucky one day and win millions, they had money before they started, so they could afford to lose 15K in a single day. so if he can afford it there shouldn't be anything wrong with it as long as he's not playing out of his league. And he should know that playing cards (gambling in general) is not a get rich quick scheme, though it has happened for some people. Most people that go to casinos bring $200 hoping to leave with $10,000. A wise man told me to be a productive gambler (if there is such a thing) you bring $500 and hope to leave with $550.

I'm a tight-aggressive player with a good understanding of odds (having studied Maths at university and gaming probabilities).

I am relatively successful on the internet and at games in my home town. What you can't beat though is the unpredictability of what other players will do and you will always get bad beats (when a player with an inferior hand gets lucky and hits a card with a low probability of occuring - which is basically luck).

However I would say one of the key things is not to let your opponent know what you are doing/thinking. Basically keeping good check of your emotions and mixing your game up a little. Acting a little at the table will always help.
