One hears so much about the cost of imprisoning a person, one wonders why more prisons are not self-sustaining.
Prisoners ought to be out there growing the food that they eat, milking the cows, whatever. Any excess produce should be sold. For that matter, set them to making things besides license plates that can be sold for a profit.
And if it takes chaining them together to make sure they don't escape, then so be it.
Edit:
For the record, Sally Panozzo, I always vote democrat. . . does this sound like the answer of a "bleeding heart"? You need to check yourself; your rabid generalizations are revealing your limited intellect.

They definately should work! You didn't get into jail for a positive thing that you have done. You are there to think about what you have done that got you there in the first place. All tv's, books of any entertainment, playing cards, etc should be removed from all jails, no matter if they are city, county or federal facilities.
You do the crime, you do the time!

If every prisoner would work they could help the overcrowding situation. like this
8am-4pm group 1 sleeps
group 2 works
group 3 works out, socializes, watches tv, whatever
4pm -12am Group 2 sleeps
group 3 works
group 1 works out socializes, watches tv, whatever
12 am- 8 am Group 3 sleeps
group 1 works
group 2 socializes, works out, watches tv, whatever
You can then fit 3 times as many prisoners in each cell.

Work. Work hard and twelve hours a day. Wear them out and put them in their cells so tired that they can't cause trouble. No TV, maybe a movie on Saturday night. Food should be simple, boring, and flavorless. They should only get water to drink. No luxuries except a library of wholesome books and classics. Oh, and mandatory civics classes coupled with classes for a GED if they don't have one.

Apparently you've never been to prison. They make prisoners work and do hard labor jobs and pay them only .10 an hour. (Ten cents). It is mandatory for prisnors to work in prison. They don't just lay around and watch tv all day. It's called "legalized slavery".

I am all for the old fashioned chain gang punishment. I have to work to support my family plus pay taxes to support anyone who is living off the government (prisoners, welfare recipients etc). Why should they get a free ride? Personally, I don't believe they should have TV, computers, cable, or weights. If they want something to do after working all day, let them get an education.

no they should not lay around all day......they should be out doing things such as helping the elderly and disabled all while under the watchful eye of a guard...they could be be doing disaster relief...they could be helping around the the lock up where they are......they could also help out the Churches and learn the word of the Lord so that when they are released they can bring the word with them.....they should be trained for jobs not given jobs...so when they re-enter society they will have something to turn toward besides a life of crime....

Prisoners actually do work. Some are farmed out to the highway department for clean up efforts. Others work for laundry services. Others still are sent out to do community work for townships and the like. They are offered the opportunity to get high school and college diplomas

I think they should have to sit in a cell 24 hours a day, no tv, no radio, nothing, just 4 walls and there own thoughts, they committed the crime, they do the time!

I think they should be given a necktie party, just like in the old west. Our tax dollars could be put to much better use. Doesn't cost much for a rope and a nice strong tree branch. I would start first with the tree hugging, bleeding heart pansie commies that have helped to strip the backbone away from this once proud country
