Never be honest when you can cheat. It's easier, cheaper, more fun, and demands far less responsibility.
Honesty is such a hindrance to the good life and even survival. How do neo-Darwinists suppose that it ever evolved?

My mom always told me "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free". It means a man doesn't have to marry you for sex if your willing to give it up so easily. Keep you legs closed and you'll get a husband.
As for "never buy a cow if you can milk one through the fence" I've never heard that before. It sounds to much like stealing to me.

Basically it means "Something for nothing". Why buy the cow, pay for its feed, a barn, pasture, etc. when all you have to do is reach through the fence and get free milk.
Most commonly it is applied to the situation of living together without being married. If you can have all the "fringe benefits" of marriage, then why go through the ceremony for a piece of paper.
Like a previous poster stated, it also is used to refer to having an affair. Why "buy" a wife when the neighbor's wife is "available" without any strings attached.

it's a joke on an old saying. it goes: why buy the milk when you can own the cow. (or something like that- meaning why keep buying or getting something when you go straight to the sorce) So this means why be buying or getting something when you can just steal it (through the fence so to speak)

sounds like it means why would you buy something you are already getting for free....or.....why would you marry someone you can already have sex with without marrying them......never heard the fence part though, I have always heard it said, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.

Its just like saying ...Why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free?
Most people use that saying in reference to relationships where two people are living together.
They say that to the woman, meaning..Why should he marry you if he's arleady getting all of the benefits?

Glasshalf, Hardtimes and Anna got it right. This is an old expression and I heard it a lot growing up. It meant, Don't bother committing to marriage when she's giving you the sex anyway. It was a piece of advice for the men, and a warning to the girls not to put out if they wanted to catch a husband.

I think it means don't buy a cow if your neighbours got one because you can steal milk from them.
