I have recently started jogging (without any guidance but after consulting websites.) On fifth day after jogging for say 3 kilometers, I felt so breathless that I had to stop. Can anybody tell me if this is normal or should I consult a doctor. previously I never felt such problem but as usual with time I had to take inhale and exhale faster and faster until I felt I had reached extreme situation when I stopped, walked for some time, and started jogging after recovery. On fourth day I have covered more distance than fifth day. Why is it so that only today I felt breathless? Am I doing something wrong? Before jogging I warm up and do stretching exercises as usual. When I need to inhale fast is it good to inhale both through nose and mouth? sometimes my nostril is partially blocked.

Don't worry, you're just out of shape and it's going to take some time to develop endurance. Although you ARE breathing and there's an exchange of oxygen and so forth, your body is not recovering quick enough and it has to develop endurance to work anaerobically (without oxygen). Slow down and run longer distances; after a while, when you do not feel so fatigued at that distance, add a bit of speed. It will come when it comes, not before.

Do not run where there are cars going by or you'll be inhaling the noxious fumes! That ain't doing much for you, either!

Time yourself between starting point and ending point. When you can do the same times and you do not feel so winded, start trying to beat the time by a few dozen seconds and get into a nice (faster) rhythm.

Every month or so, speed it up until you feel comfortable going from point "A" to point "B" at a faster speed. After a while, you may want to fill a couple of old socks with a pound of beans or pebbles and carry one in each hand. Then try to maintain the same speed with a pound of beans of pebbles in each hand. Work your endurance up little by little. It will take time, but you WILL get there sooner or later (possibly later than sooner). Good luck and best wishes.

Yes, it's good that you do warm up and stretching exercises BEFORE you start your jogging session but it's equally important that you warm down and also do more stretching exercises to prevent tightness.

Well, what you're doing wrong is normal. We tend to think we can do more than we can. You started of very aggressively. A three k jog without any prior record of exercise is a little much. I would suggest you try jogging 1 k then walk a block or so then jog 1 k etc. You will soon (depending on your level of "out of shape" be able to jog the 3k. The biggest danger with starting to fast is injuring yourself. Make sure you stretch really well before running/jogging.

You may be a litle out of shape. Or you are running harder or up a hill. It can be a number of things. I run about 2-3 miles 3-4 times a week and some days I am more out of breath than other days. I got a little out of the routine and was huffing and puffing up hills and had to walk. Walk fast...if you have to stop running.

yes low blood pressure could be a reason. You should also take a lung function test to check for your vital capicity etc. I would rather suggest you to seek the help of yoga. Practice the following asanas: KAPALBHANTI; for 10 minutes ANULOM VILOM: for 20 minutes SURYA NAMASKAAR: for 10 minutes You can increase the duration as you as your capacity allows. But do remember to practice on an empty stomach and early in the morning. You will find all the details of the asanas written in bold if you will make a google search good luck

I WOULD HAVE MY HEART CHECKED. HEART PROBLEMS MAKE YOU BREATHLESS.
