If it is a rust stain then CLR would be a good choice for removal - just follow directions. If it is from some other compound in your water supply then try white vinegar. Pour into area where water sits and leave for a while - wash off with warm water. You may have to do a couple of times. DO NOT use any abrasive pad or cleaner as this will scratch the suface and just give a deeper area for stains to collect in the future.

Our water used to be so bad that in a week our tub and toilet was bright orange. I used Bar Keeper's Friend, the liquid not the scouring powder. I would mix it half strength with water in a spray bottle and just saturate the stain. Let in sit and then wipe, sometimes a scrubber sponge was needed. just make sure to open the windows and run a fan, the fumes are strong.

Lemon-salt in boiling water works for me, but if it's a ring in your toilet bowl, I would let the lemon-salt sit for a bit on it (at least a half an hour), before pouring the boiling water over it. It may need to be repeated a few times.

I was also going to suggest The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner. I was so surprised at how well it worked and it costs a dollar or less around here. We have very hard water and it works wonders for me.

Pumice stone. They make them especially for cleaning. I had hard water deposits on my toliet bowl and it took them right off. Here is a link:

You can get them about anywhere but the link above will show you a picture of what to look for.

pure and simple white vinegar
soak this in a length of cotton wool and try to keep it in place (somehow) - this is very good on limescaled taps, but then again, you can attach easy with elastic band
good luck
