Engine can be hot or cold. Sometimes the rpm's drop to 500 or less when I stop -but not every time. The car will shake abit and die. Often then, it will not crank up unless I mash the gas pedal. It has fuel injectors. The car cranks and runs fine normally. Just occaisionally, not all the time, will idle real slow when I stop, then die. It 'seems' to me that something cuts the gas off. I do not think it is the filter-it runs too good. Any ideas? thanks

It has had a standard tune up. The alternator is okay, the battery is good. Check engine light is NOT on.

I have a Nissan Sentra and when I have those problems it is either the alternator is working at partial charge or the fuel pressure regulator went faulty. The 1st you will see if your battery-low warning comes on after an hour or so; with the 2nd, there is a small item ($75 part) that exists between the fuel pump & the fuel injector. It is a diaphram that regulates pressure going to the fuel injector. When the diaphram has a pin-prick hole in it, the fuel feeds too much in either direction --- fuel tank or engine. For me, it caused my engine to switch between feast & famine mode; to correct for this, I would do as you do and hold the gas to start and place it in neutral at stops.

I don't know 'if' this is your problem, but its what happened to me.

Hope this helps!!!

Could be a clogged EGR valve, dirty injectors or a fuel filter that is gradually going bad, or the IAC motot needs to be adjusted ( Idle Air Control) or a fuel pressure regulator. Take the car to a garage to check for the obvious vacuum leaks and the nmove on to a Injector cleaning service. This will clean your injectors, the valves, fuel rail, pistons, anything fuel related.
good luck

Don't take your foot off the pedal at stop lights! Keep fueling it lightly!

Check the fuel filter, could be clogged. A little thing. Hopefully within eyesight of open hood, not hiding in gas line under the car.

Check car battery too, maybe getting weak.

I had these problems on junk cars.

Id suggest a look at the timing chain/belt. If not maintained on a regular basis they can become out of synch and keep your machine from properly runing consistently.

After that, I'd check the fuel to air mixture.

I have a 98 accord that acted the same way. It had a recall on ignition switches. Check with Honda and see if any recalls were also on 98 Civics!

Are you sure it is not the air filter, you did not indicate of having to change or replace it. Does the service engine light indicater light up? Otherwise take it to a service station to have it checked, diagnosed.

Check the alternator, it make not be delivering enough electrical charge to the battery and engine. Also change the fuel pump, plugs and leads. If it still fails, then it's time to take it to the shop for the pros to look at.

My car did the same thing. We took it to a mechanic and they turned up the idle. It was set too low, for free

Check your fuel pressure regulator. It's typically the culprit.

Take it in to a professional, could be a failing alternator OR simply need your distributor and plugs changed(standard tuneup)
