Doing a science experiment with low ph's dissolving chalk. The chalk dissolves in oj, yet in cola it does not? Why? is it the carbonation or the phosphoric acid vs citric or ???? Thank you

Did the chalk dissolve in the solution because the solution had a low pH? or Did the chalk dissolve in the solution because citric acid is a chelant? Are we talking about low pH solutions that are not buffered, compared to pH solutions that are buffered? What was the normality of the respective acid solutions?

Your answer could be a combination of the above and a few more. My guess is that you are studying chelants and their effect on divalent cations.

cola contains carbonic acid; chalk is mainly what, calcium carbonate? so i guess cola cannot dissolve chalk because they have the same components

perhaps the properties of phosphoric acid and citric acid on chalk.

I'm not sure, but my guess would be the sugar saturation level of the soda may have something to do with it rather than the acidity.
