I had a colposcopy last year because of borderline cell changes. The colposcopy (biopsy) showed that there was some inflammation but no evidence of a pre-cancer process. I have to return soon for another smear......what if it shows something more sinister this time?

If the biopsy colposcopy shows that there has been more change they will usually do a biopsy. If the biopsy shows that the changes are pre-cancerous they will choose which method to take care of the abnormal cells. SOmetimes they will wait and do a repeat pap in 2-6 months. They may choose to a LEEP which is like a cauterizer. It burns away the abnormal cells. They may choose to do a cone bioposy which is cutting away of the abnormal cells. Or they may choose to freeze away the abnormal cells. Which method they choose depends on the degree of abnormality of the cells and how deep into the cervix the abnormal cells extend. Keep up with this though. Many times abnormal cell changes in the cervix are cause by a virus called HPV. Ask your Dr. to test you for this if he/she hasnt already!!

Don't borrow trouble, wait and see what it says, usually a second exam just means they want to be sure.
