When a tenant rents a property, part of what they are purchasing is an expectation of a reasonable degree of privacy. Even the landlord himself must give reasonable notice to enter the premises. In this case, my landlord granted access to my rental to a third party and much of my personal belongings were stolen. Do I sue the landlord or the thief?

The landlord would be responsible, if you can demonstrate that the landlord did indeed grant access. A criminal investigation might be helpful, contact law enforcement.

there are some questions i have for you.
was this third party a former room mate or girlfriend, or some other person you were sharing the property with?.
is any of the items taken,disputable as to who ownership belongs too?.
if you can answer no to either of these questions then i suggest you do as the other have suggested and call the police or constabulary of you district and file a complaint.
also get a lawyer and make sure you know what rights your land lord has regarding entering the premises.
in my way of thinking though it seems to me that if any one is to be held accountable it should be the landlord unless he or she had specific reasons for doing so.

To be honest, I don't think you want to sue anyone yet.

What you may want to do is to contact law enforcement and file a complaint, and notice of property being stolen.

Once that's done, and the criminal is apprehended, then go ahead and sue the pants off the screwball.

You are not telling us who this "third party" is & the circumstances in which the L/L allowed entry. Why don't you tell us the WHOLE story!

neither, go to the police . at sentencing the trial judge will order restitution.
