I am trying to put varnish on a print that has already been mounted to wood. Everytime I have put the varnish on there are bubbles that form. They are mounted so all of the paper is adhered to the board yet bubbles still form. Do I need to use a special varnish? Is there a trick to this?

Are you shaking the varnish instead of stirring it gently?

If you can safely remove the print from the wood, do so, and start over. Use a good spray adhesive and spray the print from the back. While still wet apply it to the wood. Let dry for 15 minutes or so, watching that it doesn't bubble, it shouldn't. Then coat it with a layer of mod podge or elmer's glue. Watch it again. If it starts to bubble, and it probably will, apply a little more mod podge to make it wet and gently push the bubbles out with your finger. That should take care of it.

You can buy mod podge at a crafts store.
If you use elmers glue, put a final real varnish on it after 24 hours.

no need for special varnish the trick is very thin layer of varnish and wait until it's dry to re-apply... you can always use a varnish in a spray form but read the directions on the can...don't spray to close.

Are you cleaning the surface well? maybe that's why bubbles are forming.

or try to change the brand of the varnish you are using.
