It is strange. Must be to do with how slow that they are going being unstable, though, as you say, they seem to leave it until you are upon them. Also weird that such a slow moving beast can be difficult to nip past. Further, people that waddle and groups or families that snail-pace as a bunch, successfully blocking the way. There should be pedestrian police nicking people for these offences.

I don't understand that either. I too am a fast walker and find myself behind people who keep shifting from one side to the other and I end up having to go over in the grass or street to get past them.

They don't know you're there.
The human mind makes a thousand new decisions a second. That's why we're unpredictable. I suggest you slow down in crowded areas and stop fighting reality. Other people using the pavement are not there just to upset you, they have as much right as you to be there. Live and let live.

It's for exactly the same reason that many motorists speed up as you are in the process of overtaking them. Some deep rooted urge not to lose face by being overtaken?

I sometimes stagger because I have arthritis and it sometimes causes me sudden pain, lots of people have health problems, you should slow down, if you need to power walk, try the park.
