I think it will be feasible in 10 years to build a space elevator. The problem is making a cable or "ribbon" that is immensely strong and durable. After all, it needs to be 25000 miles long.
BTW, read "Fountains of Paradise" by Arthur Clarke. It's awesome.

Of all the dozen or so attempts to reel out a long cable from the Space Shuttle, a majority have resulted in failure due to instability of the cable. In these cases, the cable is a fraction of what is needed for a space elevator.

damn, i recognize that music!! Zepplin Rocks!! in spite of the actual incontrovertible truth that the elevator feels like the easy course, i visit climb the stairway to heaven. for sure it isn't that undesirable or there does no longer were a music about it!!

It is a great idea that NASA is actively working on, as are some others, but the challenges are great. Especially making a strong enough cable. Carbon nanotubes may be strong enough, but we can't make long enough strings of them yet to test that idea.
