they are topologies..rather a system of how things should be arranged/structured/distributed/functioning

protocols are standards/rules that define how such topologies should behave....probably the most well known one wud be tcp/ip

csma/cd is collision detection enabled on ethernet networks, allowing simultaneous transmission of data by different devices.
