It so much more confusing that it was 6 years ago when I purchased my current system. There was basically HP, Dell & Gateway. Also there are more operating systems to consider now as well as processors. Should I get Windows XP Home, Pro or Media Center and what type of processor Intel Dual Core, AMD, Celeron, etc for a desktop model?

The type of computer you get depends on how much you wish to spend and how you will be using your computer. For regular computer work, and the odd 3-D game, you don't need something like a dual core CPU. Something like a CPU that's under 3 Ghz (AMD or Celeron) should be fine for regular use. A Pentium 4 CPU is faster than a Celeron, but it is also significantly more expensive. I would rather go for a Celeron.
You should get at least 1 gigabytes of memory too.

As for the operating system, Windows XP Home should be fine for you. The extra features in XP PRO are not worth the extra money for a home user. XP Media Center has problems with some multimedia devices, so it would be a waste of money to get that.

Better you go for Dell. Choose the Intel Dual core as processor. And go for Windows XP Pro or Media Center.

I'm sorry but I don't like the computers brands, I think it's better to buy a generic PC with the pieces you want. In that way, I hope to buy a new PC soon, I will tell you what I want for it, I need a Pentium 4 (sorry I don't like AMD), minimum 3.4 GHz, 1 Gb DDR2, HD 200 Gb and Graphic Card of 512 Mb PCI Express (nVidia)...

Anyway, it depends on what do you want to do with your PC... so for instance, I work with PCs so I need a good machine...

I prefer the Windows XP pro (is what I use nowadays) and I will never buy a Celeron...
