Buy yourself a bra that is not going to show under the dress. You should actually take the dress with you when you're trying on bras. Get a saleswoman to help you. They have all kinds of bras made to go under formal wear. It just helps to know which range to try on.

Also, have you thought of taking the dress to a dressmaker, who could take it in so that it wasn't so loose on top? It could be as easy as taking it in a couple of inches under each arm, and shouldn't cost much.

Truthfully, it depends on the gown. Usually you would need to use a "body shaper" to help with shaping and to help with bra straps. If the gown is strapless and strapless bra is a must. Today's etiquette does not require you to wear hose, but if it is not a floor length dress you may want to wear either knee highs or stockings. You can normally find these types of items in any department store.

Depends upon the garment. You'll want a strapless bra for a strapless gown or spaghetti strapped one. You can wear the regular strapped bra with sleeved gowns. The Wonderbras are FABOULOUS for creating uplift, and decollage, while being very COMFORTABLE to wear!

Get a bustier with pushup inserts. It'll keep up what you want up and give a nice smooth look for your torso since evening gowns are usually kinda clingy.

I recommend a padded "Merry Widow". It has a wide elastic that goes at your waist, sometimes lower, it has boning to smooth your shape out, and you can usually pad them as much as you want. You just have to find the right shape for your dress!
