well there is only one answer here that makes any sense. That is the one that wwhobo said. people think that oil breaks down and that just because it is synthetic it will last longer. They couldnt be more wrong. Oil never "breaks" down. It just gets dirty and contaminated. They have additive packages that are out in the oil that trap the dirt particles. Kind of liker a sponge. Once that additive is full it cant trap any more dirt so the next additive gets it so on and so on until all the additives are full then the dirt just flows in the oil freely. Synthetic oils are much better oils but they still get dirty just as fast as conventional oil. And also the big problem is that an oil filter is designed to last 3000k-5000k miles. Any way listen to hobo and change it regularly. Go by the owners manual not what they tell you at the oil change or dealer. If your manual says 5000k miles then change it at 5000k miles synthetic or not.

You see the answers, and you see what people say. I can't say that they are wrong, but I personally wouldn't follow anything other than 3,000 mile increments. Sure, oils can handle more, some even claim up to 15,000. BUT, your manufacturer recommends a certain mileage. If they recommend 3,000 miles, and you let it go to 5,000 miles, and something happens to that engine...if you have a warranty, you have now voided it by not following their insturctions and recommendations and are S.O.L. when it will come to repairing it. How much did the change cost? $20? $30? A new engine with installation can run up to $8,000.
$30?
$8,000?
$30?
$8,000?
It's cheap insurance to do it at 3,000 mile increments. You cannot harm your engine by changing it's oil often either. Besides, you should be keeping your filter clean as well, and you typically cannot pull an oil filter without draining all of the oil first. Save yourself the trouble down the line, and spend the $20 or $30 and the 15 minutes to change your oil at 3,000 miles.

Three thousand miles. No matter the type of oil you use, your oil and oil filter still collect contaminants at the same rate.
Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils last longer chemically, but they still get dirty just as fast, and I can tell you from over 30 years experience, regular oil changes are the most important thing you can do for your engine.

dont bother buying good oil if you are changing it at 3000 ml. you are wasting your $.. The semis can go 5000 and full syns can go 7500 to 10,000. the days 0f 3000 are from the 1970s

look, never change your oil, syn. or not, with less than 5000 miles on it. 7500 t0 10, 000 miles if mostly highway miles. 3000 mile change is gimmick/ rip-off myth. look at your oil on your dipstick after 3000 miles, is still honey colored or slightly stained? if so, then it is still good. if it is really black and dirty looking, then it needs to be changed. i drive 1000 highway miles a week commuting back and forth to work. my 98 model truck 285,000 on it .
