If you can afford it, I'd say go for a video iPod - an 80 GB if you can afford it. Otherwise, a 30 GB would be nice as well.
With either the 30 or the 80, you can download a lot of music, as well as videos, tv shows, and now some movies onto the iPod.
If you think he'll want small - go for a Nano, which can still hold a lot of music, but cannot play the videos, tv shows or movies.
A Nano runs from $149 (2 GB) up to $249 (8 GB), while a video is either $249 (30 GB) or $349 (80 GB).
So, for the price of an 8GB Nano, you can get a 30 GB Video iPod.
Also, something to consider (again, if you can afford it), get him a gift card for the iTunes Store, that way he can download some music, tv shows, movies, or videos to put on his shiny new iPod.

I'd go for a special edition iPod Red. A portion of each sale goes towards fighting HIV/AIDS in Africa. Look cool, listen to cool tunes and extend the life expectancy of a few people at the same time. Profound, eh?

buy him a pink ipod nano...... pink? well he will say.. "i can't be seen out with a pink ipod".. then give it to you....!! lol
