Sorry, not sure of the most correct way to phrase this question, but a New Zealander friend has been saying that there are no "full-blood" maori people left. Obviously maori people and culture survive and thrive, but are there really no people left who have complete direct ancestry from maori tribes on both sides of their family??

I agree that 'full blood' is not necessarily a useful construct. I think that the real concern is that the maori culture is preserved and continues as part of the diversity of the planet, but I was surprised at this comment and wondered if it was true or just a myth.

1. Many New Zealand websites assert that there are no pure Maori left. The first in this list claims the last one died in the 1990s.

2. Maori websites tend to be about Maori history, culture and language, and do not cover this aspect.

3. However there are plenty of people making claims on the internet that they are pure Maori, or others stating that they do indeed exist. Therefore, I conclude that the original assertion is untrue.

4. This idea may have been circulated in an attempt to undermine the case for recognition of the Maori language, Maori land rights and other financial benefits.

Kia ora, I would like to say my whakapapa, ( genealogy ) can go back long before colonization and this is for both my mother and fathers sides DIRECT line 15 generations to my Tupuna Maniapoto 1500 or 1600 . I am not talking about my grandparents brothers or sisters but my own direct line. Do not say there are no full blooded maori unless you are a person who knows every " maori persons" whakapapa. Granted there are not very many of us. The youngest FULL BLOODED I know today is 44 yrs old. We are still here and proud of it. Mauri Ora !!!

Who is a full blooded person of any race? If the human race came out of Sub-Saharan Africa, then we are, as scrambulls suggested. How ever if Tania can trace back 15 generations direct to Maniapoto and I can trace mine back to Raukawa who is Maniapoto's grandfather on both my natural parents sides , then what are we referred to as? My adopted mother is my natural grandmothers's sister. My adopted mother was born in 1905.Her sister (my natural grandmother) was older. On my birth certificate pre-adoption shows my natural mother and father as full blooded Maori. What am I? My adopted mothers death certificate shows my mum as fullblooded Maori. There are still a few of us in existance and we are from the same tree. In my tree I still have 10 (ten) surviving siblings.

simple answer yes there are i don t know who come up with this rubbish but i would like to set the record straight there are full-blooded left in New Zealand Maori in New Zealand
i know because i live with one my flat mate who lives with me came to Taranaki to look for work couldn t find a
job an ended up flatting with me he also had a stroke an was unable to look after himself so i became his power of attorney.

because he had no family down here i had to take him to winz to get his benefit sorted out because he couldn t sign any legal papers when i went there they told me i had to have three forms of ID ie: licence passport an birth certificate he only had licence so had to apply for his birth certificate when i received it i was
surprise to find on his birth certificate that he was full - blooded Maori i didn t think there were any left
either an his mother an father were full blooded Maori too.
also found out he was a twin an his brother was alive an living in Hamilton managed to get his phone number an he confirmed to me that they are full blooded Maori an there s five in there family so i rang births deaths an
marriages an asked is that right that my flatmate was full blooded Maori an they said yes i asked how do you
know she said well because our records show that he is; she also said that Maori that have some European blood
its written on there birth certificate as of Maori descent but the ones that are full- blooded Maori have got
it stamped on there birth certificate like your mate has as full - blooded Maori then told her i thought
there were no full - blooded Maori left in New Zealand she said yes there is an lot more than people think
asked her how many she said cant answer that cause of privacy act.

I find it encouraging that the peoples are apparently intermarrying without prejudice. I think it very unlikely that there are not some who are 'pure blood'.
However it would not really be a loss, there is one human race, and we are all related. Even the scientists now concurr this is true citing the African Eve.
Its time more of the bigoted were forced to see the Tv program of that name.
