Ok, maybe I don't take it completely seriously, but all the same, I'm curious to ask this here.
Basically, there was an article in PC Magazine about an upcoming particle accelerator experiment, in which it was mentioned that there is the potential that mini black holes could be generated that would not decay. The article states that the consequences could be disasterous. Theoretically, what would the consequences be? Could a mini black hole really gobble up the planet as the link suggestions?

No, because the mini black hole would have too small a size. Black holes do not pull in matter from large distances, only matter that gets too close. Such a mini black hole would never get close enough to any atom to attract it. At that scale, the size of the atoms compared to the distance between them is much larger than the space between stars compared to their size, and stars almost never pull each other in, unless they were already close to start with.

No a particle accelerator could not make a black hole, that is not what they are intended for. Partcle accelerators are made to collide particles at high speeds and create subatomic particles, to study the origin of our universe. Plus we could not generate enough mass (greater than 1.4 solar masses in a space of a few kilometers.) If it did happen though we wouldn't know it because time stops in a black hole due to time dialtion effects. An outside observer would see us ripped apart as the parts of us closer to the black hole would move faster than those further away. Our planet would be strectched out and ripped apart too.

They can't really make mini black holes. They can create conditions that have some of the qualities of black holes for a picosend or two.

If they did make a mini black hole it would instantly evaporate through Hawking radiation.

If Haking was wrong, the black hole would have a radius so small the most it would consume is a stray atom every few years.

I just got back from the site and I personally think it's a scam for money.

However, if a disaster did arise at the particle accelerator no one can say for a certainty what will happen - would it actually be out of control or would they have covered the possibility and have a plan to rectify it? Either way, I don't think the general public will ever know so it's pointless to worry about it. It's beyond the individual's control.

I even have it on stable authority that we are going to all disappear right into a black hollow the next day around lunchtime however the Earth is quite not completely ate up.in basic terms the undesirable bits would be left in the back of. we are able to all come out the different ingredient by utilising tea time : prosperous, no could desire to artwork anymore plus sensible , perfect and surrounded by utilising diverse houris ( precise quantity to be shown ). not sure what the spouse's gonna make of it nevertheless.Availabilty newspapers TBA.

Without having read the article, I know that the smaller the black hole, the more powerful and the stronger it is. FYI, supposedly, at the center of the galaxy is one or more black holes, sucking up the galaxy, that's why it's all together like that, and we're about to eat up the andromeda galaxy too I think.
