I have also pondered this question. Its almost like sex is taboo to talk about and discuss without embarrassment and or scolding. Everyone does it and I honestly believe that if we as Americans weren't so hush hush about it I think our children would learn more efficiently and we wouldn't have some many social issues regarding STD's and teenage pregnancy.
There was a study conducted a few years back saying that the Netherlands had the lowest STD and teenage pregnancy/abortion rates in the world. Sex to them isn't shameful and is openly discussed like you would the weather. Knowledge is power and instead of distilling us with "abstinence is everything" they should be promoting sex is healthy, we need it, and then teach more effective ways of protecting ourselves. Sex class is introduced to children at an awkward puberty age. OF course they aren't going to pay attention and be bash full when discussing it cause they are at an age when they are confused themselves about everything. If sex was introduced earlier to children then they would have more years of education on the topic and not consider it sin to do it and try to hide it.

Americans, as wonderful as they are, just have to be in everyone else's business. This isn't only true politically, but on a personal level as well.
The first responder was correct - it is in part due to the "puritan" beginnings that this nation was founded upon. They took the joy out of sex, and made it something that was dirty. Sex is a gift from God, and the Europeans look at it that way. It is something that is enjoyable, and something to enjoy.
Americans obsess over it, as it is still, even today often "off limits" for discussion. For a country that is supposed to epitomize freedom, Americans are not truly free. When they can be who they want to be, and individuals are able to live thier lives (so long as they don't directly negatively interfere with someone elses) the way they chose, to include how they percieve sex and sexuality, then they will be liberated, as the Europeans.

because the country is run by old people and they try to instill their old world values that they don't follow. They try to promote monogamy but they are entrenched in scandals over sleeping with under aged boys, or trying to solicit a prostitute. Republicans are the biggest hypocrites of this.

I don't know why sexuality shouldn't be private and personal.

Europeans are extremely liberal... liberals tend to be more "open" about sex. (I put open in quotes because this is not an appropriate word... ). It is perfectly OK to keep sex in the privacy of your own home and not flaunt it out and about.

Because Americans are caught up on the fake family values the republicans tout ... so they just do their dirt in the dark and hope nobody finds out.

that is because european society is more accepting of bastards. US society views it as culturally questionable for young women to have bastards and for men to not support their offspring. Bear in mind that these standards apply only to "white" people. the other breeds can behave like monkeys and dogs if they desire
