It wont harm them! They are not eating them they are just gnawing on them! If you notice though that the remains of the toilet role are not around it (if they really eat them and not hide the remains) then take it away because toilet roles contain glue and thats not good for the animal! I have a hamster and he is gnawing on the toilet rolls as well but he doesnt swallow them. I see the remains around the toilet role! Look carefully and do accordingly! Good luck and a biiiiig stroke to your gueani pigs!

I assume you are talking about the inner cardboard of a toilet roll? If this is so, it is probably best to take it out of their cage for a while, if they eat too much it will block up their intestines, plus there is glue on those things, and I'm sure enough of it would make them very sick. Do you have anything else in the cage for them to chew on? You see, as with Gerbils, Rats and Hamsters, a Guinea pigs teeth keep growing for the duration of it's life, so they need to gnaw on things to keep them from overgrowing and piercing the roof of their mouth. You can get little wooden chew sticks in your local petstore for them to chew on, you should buy a couple and put them in the cage for the guinea pigs to chew on, see if that makes a difference.

It's fine! Guinea pigs and rabbits love toilet rolls to play with - try stuffing them with hay to make them more interesting. The only bit that might be potentially harmful is any remains of glue from where the loo paper was attached - I only give my rabbit rolls that don't have any glue marks on. They will chew them, but will just come out in their poop.

I had guinea pigs that lived for 6 years, they had a cardboard box in their cage as a 'house' and always chewed on this. As rodents their teeth continue to grow and need to be worn down, if you are worried go to the pet shop and you will be able to buy something appropraite for them to chew on. But I can't imagine there's a problem!

Are you sure they're eating them? Most likely they're simply chewing on them to wear their teeth down, which is a good thing! They might also be shredding the tubes to use as bedding.

If they are eating it, cardboard is just paper fibers, so it really won't hurt them. All my rodent pets have loved chewing anything they can get their paws on, and they seem to be particularly fond of cardboard!

It is ok for them to chew on it, but try to not give it to them too often..maybe once a week. How old are they? If they are fairly young, under a year, you should take it away from them. Good luck!

At what point did you decide to feed them toilet rolls?

2006-10-17 13:11:30 · answer #10 · answered by james s 2 · 0 0

yeah - it is probably fine.

I don't understand the parallel with eating knives, toilet rolls would be fine for humans to eat, and even more fine for rodents - it's just pulped wood.
