Because the Earth is tilted on its axis. In the winter, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, so the path you travel on the Earth is more in the dark. Note that this is not true all over the Earth. On the equator, the days and nights are always equal. In the Southern hemisphere, it's the opposite of the Northern hemisphere.

The EArth is tilted at 23.5 degrees relative to the plane of orbit around the sun. In the summer the North Pole is pointing towards the sun. As the Earth rotates there is only a short time in the day (at temperate latitudes) that a point is in the sun's shadow. Anything in the arctic circle is never in shadow.

In Winter, it's the opposite, North pole points away from the sun

it has to do with the tilt of the earth. Our axis is tilted so that either the northern or southern hemisphere is pointed away from the sun, while the other one is tilted towards it. In the winter, that hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, but then due to the rotation of the earth around the sun and the way it spins on it's axis, that same hemisphere is then tilted toward the sun in the summer, and equally as the other hemisphere in the spring and fall.

Because in the northern hemisphere the Earth is tilted away from the sun. In the southern hemisphere the Earth is tilted toward the sun so they have summer when the north has winter.
