Hi. I use hardwood mulch. I apply the mulch in late spring, 3 - 4 inches deep. Do not put right up against your perennial plants..leavea ring around them. You can add extra in the fall to protect your plants over the winter. In early spring as the weather warms and the rains begin, you can remove spent mulch, leaves, debris, etc. and apply a fresh layer in late spring. If that seems like too much work, you can just leave the mulch in place year round and add to as it decomposes.

Hope this helps!

On my flower beds I use non floating mulch. In spring I add a bag or so to replenish what has dissolved in to the dirt. My trees have mulch around them, but I try to keep it away from direct contact with the base of the tree.

I rake up my neighbors leaves and use them, I just pile a few inches over the areas my bulbs are planted and some perennial plants too, I don't know about trees tho, maybe if they are newly planted and are still fairly young and not established yet, then on the base of the tree and out a few feet to keep the ground with the roots from freezing. Good Luck.

The best thing to do is kill everything where the mulch is going, then lay down landscaping plastic. Next lay down at least six inches of mulch.
