depends on the pet.
Certain breeds of horses, eg appaloosa have to be photographed because of all the spots, try drawing one - a nightmare, whereas other breeds of horses have to be "drawn" by a vet. this shows the different hair patterns called whorls which is unique to each horse, or the colour patches of a piebald or skewbald horse. if it is microchipped, this is also entered on the passport. It is a legal requirement for ALL horses and ponies and donkeys to have a passport in the UK.
Dogs are microchipped as to a lay person, one rottie looks the same as any other.

Well I only have a passport for my horses and they dont have photos! Their markings are written onto the passport and a microchip number which is kept in their neck - the corresponding number is also on the passport. xx

Yes, my daughter is preparing to move to another country with her husband, children and dog. She has (Sammy the dog) to have her passport photo done.
