I'll use it mostly to keep in touch - work and family. I'm leaning toward simple, but maybe there's some great feature that I should have that I don't know about. I don't want to sign on for 2 or 3 years then realise I picked the wrong thing.

Multi region? For when Traveling Abroad?
Blue tooth? For wireless accessories and communicating with computers or other Mobile users?

Don't get something that charges you for text messaging and internet fees. Just make sure you read up on the plan and its features before purchasing. Your problem is not so much the phone, but rather the plan that you choose to go with the phone. You can get a nice looking phone but an inexpensive plan, it just depends on what you prefer. If I were you, I wouldn't lean towards something like the Motorola Razor because they are expensive, but you also don't want to lean towards the oldschool Nokias, if they sell them anymore. I'd get something more simple. Motorola does have good phones, though. I have the Motorola V220 and it works just fine. I don't know if they sell that specific style anymore, but look for something like that.

what about a blackberry - essential for staying in tune with what's going at work b/c you can check & respond to emails.
LG cell phones - have that mp3 option if you want to listen to music on them.
i think as far as service is concerned verizon, nextel, & cingular are good. but, it may also depend on where u live. i live in the dc area. verizon gets great reception & service. i like nextel only because it works while your in the subway. and cingular has great reception and service. i have cingular now and rarely ever do i get dropped calls.
as far phones i've usually done motorola, samsung, or LG phones. and i havent had any serious problems with them. they all basic model phones for doing just what you explained you needed or they have those phones that do everything under the sun, but talk for you.
check out the link below because it allows you to compare different phones, services. you can compares phones based on service you want, models you want, or based on year of phone. its pretty good.
another option is if you like switching up phones every so often like i do, try e-bay. at least you dont have to pay full price for the phones.
