Babe Ruth.
This question comes up very often, and the reason I always say Ruth is because no matter how good Willie Mays, Ted Williams or Stan Musial were, no one ever has dominated the game IN HIS OWN TIME the way that Ruth did.
I certainly think he would not do today what he did in the 20's, but back then his numbers where so great tha no one came close to him. Only Gehrig managed to give him competition, and he was a teammate.

I am not sure why you came up with this question, but you are never going to find a definitive answer to this. People will always say Ruth, Cobb, Mantle, Rose, Gehrig, and I can keep going. But for me I would have to say Ruth then Cobb then Musial. You have to remember you can't just go by the numbers if you are trying to actually do a report on this since you asked this in every sport. You have to take a look at how he performed in the clutch. As a person off the field I wouldn't look at that to see who is the best but if you do take Cobb and Rose off that list of yours.

I'd go with Babe Ruth, with a bunch of guys contesting second place.

It's not just the home runs that Ruth put up, but the dominance he had in the power game as compared to the rest of the league. When he hit 54 homers in 1920, that was 35 more than George Sisler had to finish second. He again led by 35 in 1921, and that pattern was repeated often until Lou Gehrig came along.

Ruth was also an excellent fielder in his prime, although he's remembered now as rather portly because the only video clips we see of him are from his later days. And of course he was also a great pitcher.

There are plenty of others to choose from - Gehrig, Cobb, Hornsby, Williams, Mantle, Mays - but I don't think any of them stood above their peers as did the Babe.

Def Roberto Clemente. He was not only a good ball player but he also did a lot for both the Hispanic community and others that were in need. He set a good example on how to use your talents to the full yet remain a good person and to seize the oppurtunity to affirm kind gestures.

Im sick of the overrated babe ruth, hitting in a major hitters era (home run ball) and pitching in a major pitcher's era (dead ball). He faced pitchers at a time where an "unhittable" fastball (Walter Johnson) was 91 MPH at its fastest. He had a right field fence 290 feet away. I think anybody who thinks Ruth would be able to succeed in todays game is an ignorant jackass. The best player ever is Willie Mays.

Willie Mays of course, field, throw, run, and hit. Babe Ruth would be just another player with today's pitchers. The pitchers he hit against were mostly meek by today's standards.

My vote goes to Ted Williams. One of the finest hitters ever. and the last man to average .400 for a season. Who knows what his final stats might have been had he not served in the military during World War II.

cal ripken was garbage, he was more worried about his stupid games played record than winning. he played hurt so much and cost his team many wins over the years. he was lucky to get to the world series in his rookie year and i'm glad he never got back.
lou gehrig was the greatest player ever. he played everyday and still won games. never hurt his team by playing hurt and was an all around great person. funny thing is, i hate the yankees. but i love lou.

Babe Ruth.

Anybody else hit over 700 homeruns AND win 94 career games? Case closed.
