The easy answer would be to say that it is named after the country of Mexico. This, however, would be wrong. Not many people know the true story behind the name of New Mexico but I think I will let you in on the secret. Just don't go spreading it around.

Let us separate the name into its component parts, Newme and Xico. It actually started out as one word but the space was added as a typo in the bill in congress that set up New Mexico as a territory.

1. Newme-This is an old word which no one is really sure of the original meaning. The people who decided to use it thought it sounded fun and they used it as a colloquialism meaning approximately what Phat means today. ie. "You got some newme spokes on your wagon."

2. Xico- Was the nickname of one of the first settlers who moved into the area after the US had taken it from Mexico. The settler, whose real name was Frank Frankson (he hated his parents), was very popular if somewhat excentric. He liked to throw big parties every year and instead of cleaning up after all the revelry he just burned down his house and built a new one. He had a really good friend who would say "There it goes," everytime Frank would burn down his house. But this friend talked kind of funny and it sounded more like "Zere ic ohhs." It came to be the custom of all the revelers to shout this at the end of the party, and since they were all drunk it really got mased together into one word "Zico." This is what they started to call Frank year round. Frank thought that X was a much cooler letter than Z so when he started to use the nickname often as his name he changed it.

The legend of Xico spread through out the area and many people who didn't really know him started to add the compiment of calling him Newme Xico. When the territory had to adopt a name Newme Xico was so popular the people thought they would honor him so they told Congress they wanted to be called Newmexico. Well a legislative aide, who was writing up the bill after a long night of drinking, accidentally speparated the word and no body caught it until after the bill had been passed. Well politicians at that time were just like today, they couldn't admit making a mistake so they just left it as it is. That is how the state of New Mexico was named.

It was a lot cleaner than old Mexico, so the settlers there thought it looked newer.
