Komodo Dragon. Its 10 feet long and weighs 300 pounds.
Its long neck supports a large head with cruel-looking jaws and its powerful, thick tail accounts for half its length. Short legs with clawed feet and a stout body complete the picture, but the final dragon-like touch is the forked tongue which the Komodo Dragon flicks out as it trundles along.

KOMODO DRAGON.

Crocodile Monitor lizards are one of the rarest of all the different Monitor Lizards. Crocodile Monitors also have the claim to fame of being the “Worlds Largest Lizard”. Now I am sure that 99% of you are thinking, “I always thought that the Komodo Dragon was the worlds largest lizard”. While, there is no doubt that the Komodo Dragon is an extremely big lizard, it is not the largest. In actuality, the Komodo Dragon is the “Heaviest Lizard”. To the best of my knowledge, the largest Komodo Monitor was recorded at 10’2”, and weighed 395 pounds. Definitely a big badass lizard, but still not the biggest.

Can you imagine a lizard 10 feet long and weighing 300 pounds? There is a monster lizard of this size called the Komodo Dragon. It is easy to see how it came to be called a dragon. Its long neck supports a large head with cruel-looking jaws and its powerful, thick tail accounts for half its length. Short legs with clawed feet and a stout body complete the picture, but the final dragon-like touch is the forked tongue which the Komodo Dragon flicks out as it trundles along.

Altogether this is a thoroughly frightening lizard. It is said that the tail is fairly ineffective against man, but the terrible jaws would make a serious wound if they clamped on to an arm or leg. The Komodo Dragon is a ferocious carnivore and will kill and eat any smaller animal it can catch. Some have even been reported eating small deer and pigs.

The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the largest living lizard in the world, growing to an average length of 2-3 meters (approximently 6.5-10 feet). In the wild large adults tend to weigh around 70kg (154 pounds). Captive specimens often weigh more. The largest verified wild specimen was 3.13 metres (10 feet 3 inches) long and weighed 166kg (365 pounds), including undigested food. It is a member of the monitor lizard family, Varanidae, and inhabits various islands in Indonesia.

Sightings of the Komodo dragon were first reported to Europeans in 1910. Widespread knowledge came after 1912, in which Peter Ouwens, the director of the Zoological Museum at Bogor, Java, published a paper on the topic. In 1980 the Komodo National Park was founded to help protect their population.

Scientific Name: Varanus Komodoensis
Common Name: Ora, Komodo Dragon
Wild Population: 3,000 to 5,000
DESCRIPTION:
The Komodo Dragon is the largest lizard. A male dragon can grow up to 10 feet, but an average dragon is 8 feet. They weigh 200 pounds. A female dragon can grow up to be 8 feet, but an average dragon is less than 8 feet. They weigh about 150 pounds. Young dragons are at least 29 inches.

The Komodo are fast moving and agile. They have 60 teeth and they are pointy and sharp. The Komodo takes huge bites from its prey. Just like sharks, their teeth replace every time they loose a tooth. Their mouth is full of poisonous bacteria and even if its prey survives the original attack, it will die of infection later.

The largest living lizard in the world is the Komodo Dragon. They are large enough to hunt and kill big game. They usually track an injured deer, and they will hunt as a pack, bite on the deer and wait for it to die. Komodos are poisonous in the sense as we know it. They have deadly bacteria in their saliva. It can take days for this bacteria to take down its prey, so they will follow it and wait.

They will also eat humans if the oppurtunity presents itself.
