i am english and really curious, in films they make americans seem really young when they drive, but really old when they drink.
In england:
Drink-18 in public place but ANY age if on private property
Smoke-16 to buy ciggys, but any age if on private property
Drive-17 but will soon be 18
Sex-16
Anal sex-18
Does anyone else think this is pretty lax?

In the United States,
To legally purchase AND consume alcohol, you must be at least 21-years old.
To legally purchase cigarettes, you must be at least 18-years old.
To legally drive, you must be at least 16-years old with a valid drivers license. You can obtain a learner's permit 3-6 months before your 16th birthday depending on which state you live in.
To legally have sex, that varies state-by-state. The legal age of consent is 18-years old in about half of the states, in others it is 17-years old. By "legal age of consent", that means you can have sexual relations with a person of any age who also over the "legal age of consent". There are various stipulations which state that individuals under the legal age of consent can have sex with another individual provided they are within a certain age range. I know this question is 8 years old but I'm sure in that time none of the British laws have changed, so your facts are wrong anyway!!
Drinking is 18 to buy and consume but 16 if you have parental supervision, with a meal at a restaurant.
Smoking is 18 to buy, 16 to consume
Driving is STILL 17 and isn't/hasn't changed to 18, but they're making it so that you can't take your practical test until you're 18, but you can learn when you're 17 (I think)
Sex - who ever heard of an age limit for anal sex? Legal age of consent for any kind of sex is 16.

Sex = 18
Anal sex = 18
The law says this, but there are a lot of people out there that do these things underage and never get caught. So the law that sets limits about these things don't quite matter anymore.

Purchasing drink 18 - although in some places you need to have ID if they think you look too young. Some bars/pubs/clubs may refuse to admit under 21s. Some off-licences (liquor stores) may refuse to serve under 21s. Beer, wine or cider, in a restaurant, with a meal if you are 16 - (accompanied by an Adult - except in Scotland, where no is adult required) In some parts of Scotland - like where I live - local bye-laws may prevent you from consuming alcohol in a public place, that goes for all ages. Drinking at home with parents permission - from age 5 to 17 (yes I couldn't quite believe but it's true!!!) Smoke 18 - again you'll be asked for ID to buy tobacco Drive 17 Sex 16 No the laws aren't relaxed BTW Scotland is part of the UK. However we do have our own separate legal system, but most laws are the same as the rest of the UK, a few minor differences. Also in Scotland Bye-Laws can vary by county.

Sex--it depends by the state you live in--a person will have sex when he or she thinks they are ready but statutory rape is considered 5 years older and in some cases 3 years.
Yes i believe some of Englands laws are lax, however, so are some of the States.

drive 16, smoke, vote, porn 18, drink 21 and as far as I know you can have sex when ever, but if you are older than 20 you can only have sex with a girl or boy that is 18 or older unless you live in utah and some other states where it is 16. so you have to be 18 to have anal sex in england, what is the punishment for 17 year olds and how do they tell?

It depends where you are. Most places smoking is 18. Drinking varies, but usually 21. Sex is 14 at one place, but 16, and 18 are common.

In the USA we have states rights so the states can choose some of there laws.
US Laws
to buy cigarettes or cigars is 18 u can be under with parent consent
to buy alcohol is 21 but under the age if parent hands them the drink or parent says its ok.
States laws. change a bit but this is for Texas
Sex is 13 but to have sex under age the partner has to be under the age of 18, although a 17 and 18 year old can have sex.
In texas to get your permit you have to be 15 and be about a month before your 16th or take a course at public school. You only need a permit for 1 month before you can get your license. If you fail the test for your license they make you go to a state mandated course before you get your license.
