I do hunter/jumper around 3 feet and I would like to get a saddle of my own. What type of saddle would be the best for my needs? I do trail rides every now and then as well. Should I get a close contact saddle or an all purpose saddle? Or neither?

Now that you have gotten to 3 feet, I would definitely get a close contact saddle. I find they make it much easier to keep in balance over larger jumps. You can still trail ride and they work just fine! Depending on how often you ride and what circuit you plan to show if you are going to show. When buying your saddle remember that just because it is more expensive doesn't mean it's better. I like the HDR saddles they are nice quality and not over priced, also look in Dover to see if you can buy a saddle that comes with a free gift. Used saddles are also fine, they are broken in as well :)

Good luck saddle shopping hope this helped!

I would get a close contact saddle if you ride strictly hunter/jumper. I think overall they are better balanced for jumping than an all purpose. You can trail ride in a close contact without any problem.

As far as brand of saddle, that will depend on your budget. If you can afford a pessoa or a hermes, they are excellent, well balanced saddles.

Most importantly, the saddle must fit both you and your horse. You may need to have a saddle flocker come out to fit your saddle to your horse properly.

I would purchase an all purpose saddle which leans towards jumping - meaning the flaps are set more forward rather than straight down. Be sure to measure for fit on your horse so it dosen't pinch.

I own a Stubben All Purpose, and love it to death, as an eventer, it really suits my purpose. Hope this helps.
