Well, we already have football, American Football. So we call the other sport Soccer. Since American Football is about 100 times more popular than soccer, why would we change the names now?
And just an FYI....Rugby and American Football are not the same sport!

How many times are we going to have to explain why the tearm SOCCER is used!?! Its because of countries OTHER than England that have their own National Football code and to avoid confusion they call it soccer.

football also means rugby to the americans.... american football is alos noen as footbal... to prevent confusion between these two types of footballs, we call rugby as football, n football as soccer...
