Here's the deal: I don't like wearing black or lots of makeup (I know this stuff is stereotyping and I'm sorry) but I do like a lot of books and music that are classified as goth -- 4AD, Rasputina and the Cure and things like that in terms of music, and early gothic novels, poetry and horror of pretty much any kind in terms of books. I've also found that, when looking for friends, goths and I usually get along pretty well -- we tend to have the same interests and similar cultural references. But, like I said, I don't like dressing in "typical" gothic fashion and I don't have much interest in going to clubs. What does this make me? And, really, does it matter?

I don't think the answer is easy as placing yourself strictly in one category. I have a few friends who would consider themselves goth, but they don't dress in black or go to clubs. It's all a state of mind and if you consider yourself goth, then call yourself goth. Society has a way of labeling people, and, for the most part, everyone goes along with the labels because they get a sense of belonging to one sort of group or another. So if you feel you should or need to belong to the goth group, then go for it!

Well, goth covers a pretty wide range, but you're only goth if you choose to be. You seem like a person who likes things that are usually considered gothic. You can go to goth.net, it's got some pretty helpful information. Don't feel as though you have to classify yourself, though. Just be what you've always been: yourself.

I don't think it really matters. One of the best definitions I've seen for goth don't put a requirement on dress or appearance.

And in the end, it doesn't matter too much what subculture you identify yourself with. There are still little quirks about you that make you unique, yourself, and that don't fit easily into any defined labels or scenes.

Sounds like it makes you a teenager.

Let me tell you when I was a teenager, I thought I was the biggest geek in the school. I didn't drink or smoke, I went to very few parties, I was nice to people to a fault, even if they were mean to me. I had braces and always seemed to have a zit either above my lip or on my nose.

Low and behold, as lonely as I felt, and as much as I felt I didn't fit in to any group, my high school class mates voted me Most Popular.

I will tell you that if you like the Cure but don't want to wear black, then DON'T! If you don't want to go to clubs, then DON'T! Don't give into the pressure to try to fit into a mold which doesn't quite fit. Just be yourself. People will love you for it.

That means you have a Gothic preference. Nothing more.

Listen. I enjoy women but I'm not about to get a sex change. You preference is much the same. You don't have to dress up to enjoy a culture. Just, enjoy the culture.

I think your last question is spot on - it doesn't really matter! You need to be who you are, and your choice in music shouldn't dictate what you wear. You can enjoy your favourite bands and have friends who are gothics, but you are an individual, and that's what makes you special and who you are!

Classifying your self is dumb, just be who you are, wear what you're comfortable with, don't be under the pressure of Society.

Like what you like, but do yourself a favor: don't pigeon-hole yourself into some sullen pathetic subculture because in a few years you'll look back and be really embarrassed.

Avoid labels, my friend. Be yourself, and don't sweat what you call it - it's just "you."
