The teeth are on both sides so that the key can fit either way. It is a convenience for the driver. Locks in other forms are not there for convenience, but for security. There are other locks that have keys which have notches on both sides, but the tumblers are not keyed the same on the top and bottom. It still has an up and down, but more tumblers adding to the security issue. More tumblers mean an increase cost.

to maintain morons and drunks from shoving them in the different way up and having to re-key the full vehicle. A doorknob could nicely be bumped off fairly truthfully with a screwdriver, yet removing a steerage column is merely too very corresponding to artwork. Mopar, i.e. Chrysler began that vogue BTW. Chevy and Ford used to have one sided keys, long term in the past. remote places autos have been continuously 2-sided. yet another occasion of foreigners thinking they are smarter than human beings.
