I've always just considered "feelings" as a synonym for emotion, but I recently had the idea that feelings might be literal. So are feelings literally tangible sensations, or is the word just a synonym for emotion? i.e. does heartache refer to actual chest pain?

Our emotions are real, they provide our feelings. The emotions are the instigator of feelings.

When I found out my husband was cheating on me, I couldn't stand up straight because of the pain in my gut. After a while it became more of an ache in the heart area.

A long time ago people realized that the feelings of love and sadness made a physical feeling in the chest. They decided it came from the organ in the chest--the heart. It is a real chemical reaction--there have been studies about it. I have felt my heart ache. You always want to do something for relief. Sometimes the things you do to relieve the pain are destructive, especially if it is a fast fix.
