This has bothered me for years, everytime I hear that song I always think to myself it sounds like him but always forget about it when it comes to asking someone. So, as it's just finished playing on WMP on my PC I'm asking it now while it's still fresh in my mind

Yes he did, he provided backing vocals. The songwriting credits are shared between Knopfler and Sting. Sting was visiting Montserrat during the recording of the song, and was invited to add some background vocals. Sting has stated that his only contribution was the "I Want My MTV" line, which was sung in partial parody of his own song "Don't Stand So Close To Me", originally recorded by The Police. Sting was embarrassed when his publishing company insisted on a co-writing credit (and royalties).

Yes. It was kind of lucky that Sting was visiting Montserrat during the time this song was being cut, and he was invited to sing the background vocals since he was there. Sting is credited with a writing credit for his dynamically effective use of the seminal MTV slogan. Another amazing fact is that lead singer and primary songwriter for Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, is not a big fan of overblown videos, and had to be persuaded to allow this song to have a concept video. Thank goodness he relented.

Yep, any totally 80's music lover will remember that awesome 80's song as well as the video. MTV used to rock in those days!

That was when they played REAL music videos, not this junk they play now. All these goofy reality shows and stuff.

As for the "I want my OWN tv" comment...that was hilarious, thanks for the early morning crack up. I loved that one. An innocent mistake!

My initial thought on this was no, but now you've got me singing it in my head and I think I too can hear him warbling away. And I think I remember him being on stage at the original Live AId - showing my age now - with Mark and the boys. Or perhaps it's my imagination?

Yes

The song was notable for its controversial lyrics, groundbreaking music video and a cameo appearance by Sting singing the song's ironic falsetto introduction and backing chorus, a borrowing of the cable network's slogan "I want my MTV".
