Des Monies is a great place to live. Depending on what field you are in would depend on how much money you would be able to make. Des Moines is very affordable to live there as well. If I were to move there, I would live in either West Des Moines or Clive, both suburbs. They are "newer".
Des Moines has semi-pro soccer, hockey and baseball teams. A theme park, state capital, Living History Farms, home to the State Fair (best one in the country). Des Moines is also very close to Ames which is home to Iowa State Univeristy, so there are always events there.

Whenever I want information on a place, I check the local craigslist. Here's the site for Des Moines. http://desmoines.craigslist.org/ There you can find out about jobs, apartments, and everything else.
