you have to consider that humans do. how is the beautiful plume of the peacock (on the male) any different than the grooming rituals that men and woman go through every day, why excersise, why shower, put gel in your hair, use make-up, basically what humans are attracted too in a mate, is based sub-consiously on the desire for off spring or a lteast the passing on of your genes. Granted some people will marry only for money or things like that, but intelligence, good humor and good looks are definitly qualities that potential mates look for and are also qualities that result in good offspring. If you are asking do I look for a lady with big hips so she can kick out a bunch of kids, then no. those days are as gone as the family farm.

No not at all. You don't meet people with starting a family in mind but I think that pretty soon after meeting someone you know whether you would want them as afather or not if you did want children. The animal thing is still there within us but in this day of being able to go it alone with children if it your relationship doesn't work out makes us not listen to our instincts. I think anyway but then I have a strange out look on life!!

Not me - I don't want to breed. There is MUCH more to life than that. I chose my mate on qualities that will make him a good lifelong companion such as good sense of humor, likes to travel and try new foods, creative and artistic, good listener, puts me first in the relationship (and likewise I put him first!), willing to care for me when I am ill (and visa-versa).
Keep in mind not ALL animals mate for the purposes of species propagation. There are animals that chose lifelong spouses regardless of breeding capability (i.e., certain birds)!!!

Everyone does that at a subconscious level. Ensuring that are genes survive and are passed on is the drive behind almost everything we do in life. We look for the mate that looks the healthiest, fittest and most likely to produce the best offspring.
It is all about survival of the fittest.

I think subconciously we all might do it. Personally i didn't marry my wife because i thought she would make a good mum, (i think she will but i didn't make the decision to marry her for that reason!)we are still debating whether or not we want to have children.
i don't think it should be the only criteria, as you may make fantastic children but they might not grow up in a happy home if mum and dad don't get on...

It's a biological imperative, whether we're aware of it or not. We size partners up according to their breeding potential - that's what attracts us to them in the first place.

i think that is the common factor in being sexually attracted to te other sex. and the opposites usually breed beter. in breeding is wrong for a reason.. you will end up with a hand full of teeth and hairy palms

I would argue that the mate you select (i.e. what you find attractive and then indeed go after ... ) does reflect good/healthy breeding stock on a sub-conscious level.

This is the reason I wanted daughters, and was lucky enough to get, because females survive better
